By the early 1980s, the Swiss watch industry faced an existential threat from quartz technology. However, this crisis did not define the industry. On the contrary, through strategic positioning, the overall watch industry grew exponentially, emerging larger and more valuable than before. Similarly, the natural diamond industry stands at a critical juncture. This session introduces The Swiss Parallel report, which serves as a case study and strategic framework for reshaping the diamond industry over the next 12 to 24 months. Drawing on perspectives from luxury, academia, media, and advertising, the framework will shape the day’s debates and establish the ambition needed for an industry seeking to recover, reposition, and emerge stronger.

Lab-grown diamonds have unquestionably increased pressure across the natural diamond value chain, forcing the industry to confront difficult truths. Is defending the commodity tier a viable approach? Or is it a costly distraction from sectors where natural diamonds have a clear advantage? Drawing on insights from production, polished trading, retail, and independent analysis, the panel examines natural diamonds’ premium proposition and how differentiation might provide a more credible path forward.

Natural diamonds possess qualities that cannot be replicated at scale: geological rarity, provenance, and a connection to the earth that spans billions of years. However, these attributes are not always effectively communicated to consumers. This panel explores how natural diamonds can be repositioned as irreplaceable heritage objects, drawing lessons from the “Swiss Made” standard, brand archives, and certification in restoring the prestige of mechanical watches. Leaders from luxury, gemmology, academia, and provenance will assess how certification, Digital Product Passports, and trusted origin information can create a universal authentication layer. As the distinctions between natural and lab-grown diamonds sharpen, proving rarity and provenance will be vital to maintaining premium demand and unlocking investment potential.

Repositioning natural diamonds will require a collective effort, including coordinated governance to prevent short-term competition from undermining much-needed industry transformation. The panel will explore how shared governance could turn sustainability from a compliance obligation into a source of premium value, while addressing the role of experiences and storytelling in fostering consumer confidence.

Investment-grade diamonds are not a new idea. What is new is the convergence of three forces: rapid growth in investor demand for real-world assets, the increasing scarcity of physical materials, and the integration of proven digital architecture such as blockchain and tokenisation. Together, these factors create the right conditions for a second growth engine for natural diamonds. This session is designed as a showcase, bringing together innovators developing models for tokenisation, reference pricing, digital ownership, and fractional participation in natural diamonds. Delegates will see how certified stones can be integrated into digital infrastructure, how transparent pricing models are being tested, and how access to rare diamonds might extend beyond traditional ownership.

There are four challenges that diamonds must overcome to be considered a mainstream, investable asset class: transparent mark-to-market valuation, compelling investor returns profile, reliable exit pathways, and a regulatory framework capable of supporting trade at scale. Building on the previous session, experts in valuation, finance, resale markets, and virtual-asset regulation will discuss credible price discovery, return assessment, liquidity infrastructure, and how regulation can protect participants while enabling innovation.
